Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) was originally developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder, but has since been used to effectively treat a range of mental health conditions. In general, DBT can be helpful for individuals who struggle with intense emotions, difficulty regulating their emotions, and engaging in problematic behaviours as a way to cope with their emotions.
The four main components of DBT are mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Through these components, DBT helps you to develop the skills you need to better manage your emotions, improve your relationships, and live a more fulfilling life. DBT is based on the principles of dialectics, which involves recognizing and accepting opposing perspectives. In practice, this means helping you learn to accept yourself and your emotions, while also working to make positive changes in your life.
