Exposure and Response Prevention
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a form of cognitive-behaviour therapy, which is commonly used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of ERP is to gradually expose yourself to situations that trigger your intrusive thoughts and fears (exposure) while refraining from engaging in compulsions that you may typically use to alleviate your distress (response prevention).
With the help of ERP, you can learn how to manage your intrusive thoughts more effectively, as well as learn that compulsive responses are not necessary to manage your anxiety. Over time, ERP can help you break the vicious cycle of OCD, resulting in decreased anxiety and improved quality of life.
